The aim of this training programme is to impart the initial training to enable trainee competence assessors, now referred to as learners, to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills which underpin the tasks to be performed as a Competence Assessor.

The objectives of this training are that learners will be able to:

(a) Understand the principals and corresponding roles and responsibilities involved in competence assessment

(b) Plan and carry out an assessment

(c) Monitor and verify assessment records

(d) Objectively review and assess different types of evidence

(e) Understand the importance of robust record keeping

(f) Deliver assessment feedback

The OPITO Competence Assessor Award delivered through Blended Learning requires the following:

The Blended Learning is delivered in Stages. Access to the e-learning modules are in My Training tab in the Training portal. Stage 1 & 2 are found in the OPITO Competence Assessor Award e-learning module 1. 

Stage 1 - Online registration 1 hour to complete

Stage 2- E-learning modules Self-study 5/6 hours recommended

Stage 3- Live instructor webinar and online test 1 full day (sessions run twice weekly)

Stage 4- Upon successful completion of the training, and with evidence that the skills and knowledge have been successfully applied in the workplace, the learner would be eligible to conduct workplace assessments, providing they themselves are technically competent in the discipline being assessed. Following this training, it will be the responsibility of the employing organisation to allow each assessor to gain further experience.

The OPITO Internal Verifier Award delivered through Blended Learning requires the following:

The Blended learning is delivered in Stages:

Stage 1 Online registration 1 hour to complete

Stage 2 Self study of the workbook provided

Stage 3 A live webinar 1 day of 6 hours. (sessions run once per week)

The following units will be discussed and practical exercises completed on the live webinar following a 1 hour Exam:

1. Introduction to Internal Verification

1.1 The Purpose of Internal Verification

2. The Internal Verifier’s Role

2.1 Supporting Assessors

2.2 Monitoring and Verifying the Quality of Assessments

2.3 Record Keeping and Feedback

2.4 Assuring the Competence Process

Delegates attending this Internal Verifier Blended Learning training programme will be given a series of explanations and demonstrations that will identify what they are expected to know and do. This will be followed by practical exercises allowing delegates to rehearse their skills, knowledge and understanding of the Internal Verifier role. All practical exercises conducted on the live webinar shall use, wherever possible, the actual paperwork that the delegates are expected to use in their workplace.

Stage 4- Workplace verifications to be completed within 12 months of training to become a fully qualifed OPITO Internal verifier

1. Preparing and planning assessments 

2. Assessing candidate’s performance and knowledge 

3. Confirming candidate progression and achievement 

4. Documenting each of the above according to the requirement of the management system in the workplace 

5. How to build a portfolio of evidence that meets the L&D9DI standard 

6. How to demonstrate knowledge of the above processes and a range of knowledge related to competence assessment in the workplace

Those who assess in the workplace using direct and indirect methods of assessment using examples: observation, questioning, work product, professional discussions, simulations, written evidence such as witness statements and candidate statements and RPL.

Assessment Requirements

Delegates will be required to submit a portfolio of evidence covering all of the Performance and Knowledge Criteria for the L&D9DI Unit. They must submit, as a minimum, assessment-related documentation that provides evidence for the elements listed below, for two candidates, covering two assessments per candidate: 

• Preparing to assess 

• Planning assessments 

• Assessing candidate’s performance and knowledge 

• Confirming progression and achievement

Delegates must use a range of assessment methods, including observation, questioning and work product. 

Delegates will also need to be observed carrying out part of the assessment process by an ITB (or NVQ-level) assessor and participate, with other assessors in their workplace, in standardisation practice.
