Modern jails demand modern security, and Hustad Jail, in Nordmøre, stands out as one of Norway’s most modern.  It was officially opened this winter, by state secretary, Trond Prytz, who said that when the winds of change blow, we should rather build windmills than seek shelter.  At Hustad, no one has sought shelter, but rather made changes to the building and equipment, creating a modern jail from a previously open institution.  YIT has had responsibility for these changes, which cover, not the least, security installations and surveillance.

“This is not the first time that YIT has delivered this kind of security equipment to a jail. Based on our references, and a comprehensive evaluation of our proposal, The Norwegian Correctional Service (Region West) gave us the job,” says YIT’s project manager, Helge Økland.  “The delivery includes a security station with alarms and digital storage, as well as installing cameras and cabling.  Motion sensor cameras are crucial for good surveillance.”

Økland explains further, “You don’t want unnecessary false alarms.  That’s why the system can be set to react only to human movement.  Animals, or movement from trees or leaves created by the wind, will not set off an alarm, for example.  It is all based on a logarithm that enables a learning process in the system’s computer.  It is advanced and clearly helps relieve the officers.”

Safer Department Stores for Customers and Employees
Shopping centres gather lots of people in one place, there is lots of money in circulation, and a lot of people working; but they are also attractive to people with dishonest intentions.  Expanded security leads to greater safety both for customers and those working in the shopping centre.  In the middle of Haugesund, lies the Markedet Shopping Centre, covering about 28 000 square metres, including the car park.

There are 30 different stores, over about 10 000 square metres of floor space.  This is one of Steen & Strøm’s many establishments, and the centre’s management wanted ITV-based camera surveillance.  Centre manager, Jørgen Sletten, says that they wanted camera surveillance in the shopping centre’s common areas, and in the car park, for several reasons, but especially for two reasons.  “We want all our customers and employees to feel safe with us.  Camera surveillance is a preventative measure that can hinder negative episodes here at the shopping centre.  If something happens, we then have the opportunity to document the incident with registered recordings.”

Smart Club Express Sofiemyr, in Kolbotn, just south of Oslo, is one of the stores in the Smart Club chain.  YIT has recently installed an integrated and extensive security system that covers everything from access control, to fire and burglar alarms, and controlled surveillance cameras with registration equipment.  Smart Club’s security manager, Jørund Greibrokk, says the following about the new equipment:  “We continuously conduct risk evaluations, where security for our customers and employees is central.  That’s why, beyond general surveillance, we emphasize fire alarms and automatic controls for all doors.  Through YIT’s comprehensive upgrade, customers and employees have a good reason to feel safer, while those with dishonest intentions have a good reason to feel even less safe.
