There is an increasing need for cultural competence in the business world. Most of the world’s important growing economies, such as the BRIC countries, are very distant from Norway, culturally speaking. They also often score poorly on Transparency International’s corruption index. These conditions—significant cultural differences and a high degree of corruption—mean that Norwegian companies that wish to succeed in these markets should have a strategic business plan that integrates traditional financial calculations with cultural competence. Course Content
The course will be divided into different modules, each of which deals with important conditions related to strategies of internationalization:
The Norwegian starting point
How Norwegian history, geography and culture have created some typically Norwegian core values, and how these values are reflected and practiced in today’s corporate culture. The do’s and don’ts of doing business outside of Norway
One does not necessarily have good or bad traits in every culture, but knowing what the differences are makes it easier to see where potential misunderstandings and problems might arise, how to assemble good teams, and how to run processes in an effective way. Other cultures – other values
What is to be done when one’s own values are different from those of others? Sometimes situations arise where it becomes important to establish clear guidelines for any cooperative effort, and it helps to be prepared so that the problems can be identified and dealt with in the best way. Through specific examples, the participants will be given practical challenges where they must work out solutions on their own and present them to the rest of the class. A section on Norwegian and international corruption laws and the conditions in relevant markets may be included if desired.
An emphasis will be placed on factors relating to greetings and terms of address, attire, communication and body language, leadership style and organizational culture, notions of social and sexual equality, leisure and business. Other important topics relate to how decisions are made, the importance of hierarchy, how to work with and not against the system, formalities and corporate ethics.
