What can the oil industry learn from the energy industry, and what is the business potential of this exchange of experience? This will be a central theme when the Norwegian offshore sector meets the nation’s largest energy companies at the Offshore and Energy HSE Conference, in Stavanger, March 9th-10th, 2010.
This is the third time this conference has been arranged, and the first time it has been expanded to include the energy sector. The committee foreman and conference initiator, Chul Christian Aamodt, MSc in Marine Technology, has long experience with HSE training, and has been working for the competence company, Mintra, for the past 9 years. He has worked with a broad spectrum of HSE projects, across a variety of industries and has proven that exchanging experience and learning across industries is not only possible, but also doable.
Connecting Competence “Through my work, I have seen that different resource people and companies are often competent each in their own way, when it comes to HSE,” says Aamodt.
“My goal is to connect competence and resources and contribute to exchanging experience and learning. Mintra has been working with the oil industry for many years and knows that sector well. That was the main reason we initiated the very successful HSE Conference for Offshore Contractors in 2008. Now, we have initiated special area of focus, aimed at the energy sector. Among other things, we are currently working on a large HSE project for Statkraft, where the target group includes all employees, both nationally and internationally. Throughout our work, I have become convinced that there is a great potential for exchanging experience between the energy and oil sectors; we find the same HSE challenges in both, but they are often solved differently. I believe that neither industry is better than the other, but that both are doing good work – and together they can be even better, by sharing experience and learning from each other,” says Aamodt, who has been the main driver behind the conference, and has contributed to gathering presenters and participants to share their experience and build their network. Offshore Media Group is the technical organiser, and Mintra is organising the professional content, while various industry organisations, including the Federation of Norwegian Industries, have participated as collaboration partners.
Great Respect Randi Sekkeseter is heading up Mintra’s work in the energy sector and, in her efforts to really understand the industry, she participated in a fall safety course at AAK Safety.

“At the course, I received a basic introduction to rope access work,” tells Randi Sekkeseter. “These safety courses include participants from both the energy and oil sectors. It was a great learning experience to participate in the discussion between the course participants on the similarities and differences between working at height offshore and working on high tension towers. We have great respect for the important HSE work being conducted every day in these two industries, and we depend on contributions and competence from both environments to be able to create the best possible arena for exchanging experience and generating motivation,” tells Sekkeseter. That’s why we have gathered a team of resource people from the Federation of Norwegian Industries, Statkraft, Lyse Energy, AAK Safety, Grenland Group, BIS Industrier, Bergen Group, Norsea Group, and Ocean Rig to help develop the programme for the Offshore and Energy HSE Conference 2010. We are really looking forward to an exceptional conference!
